In the metaverse, sound plays an important role in creating immersive experiences. It can be used to enhance the realism of virtual environments, provide cues for navigation and interactivity, and convey information and emotions to users. True spatial audio can also be used to create a sense of presence and spatial awareness, allowing users to orient themselves and navigate within virtual worlds.

True spatial audio is a technique that allows sounds to be perceived as coming from specific locations in a three-dimensional space. This includes the direction, distance, and movement of the sound source, as well as the reflections, reverberation, and other acoustic properties of the environment.

True spatial audio can improve the user experience by providing a more immersive and realistic listening experience. It can make it feel as if the audio is coming from specific locations in the environment, rather than just from the loudspeakers or headphones (stereo, or mono). This can enhance the sense of presence and make it feel like the listener is in the same space as the sound sources. Spatial audio can also improve the intelligibility of speech and the ability to locate and distinguish different sound sources, which can be useful in various applications such as gaming, virtual reality, and film.

Spatial audio can be experienced through headphones as well as loudspeakers. When using headphones, spatial audio can be achieved via binaural audio, which uses head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to simulate the way sound is naturally filtered by the head, ears, and torso before reaching the eardrum. This allows the listener to perceive the direction, distance, and movement of sound sources as if they were in a real 3D environment.

 

For loudspeakers, you need to employ a so-called decoder, which calculates the weights of each loudspeaker in the setup in order to reproduce a desired sound experience. 

There are several spatial audio formats that are currently available (channel-based, scene-based, and object-based), each with their own unique features and capabilities. We like all flavors of it and support all the formats.
